ABOUT THE ARTIST
Susan Hope Layfield creates contemporary fibre-based works that invite moments of stillness through texture, colour, and natural materials. Inspired by the landscapes she explores and the ever-changing beauty of her home garden, her work reflects a quiet connection to the natural world. Soft fibres, layered surfaces, and an earthy palette come together to create pieces that feel both organic and intentional.
Her practice begins with the physical act of making. Each work evolves slowly, allowing the materials to guide the process and influence the final composition. Through weaving and the thoughtful integration of ceramic elements, Susan creates tactile surfaces that encourage viewers to slow down, look closely, and reconnect with their senses.
Largely self-taught as a textile artist, Susan has been weaving since 2014 while continuing to build upon years of artistic study through workshops, courses, and independent exploration. Her work is rooted in a lifelong curiosity about materials and the quiet, restorative experience of creating by hand.
My Approach
I believe handcrafted objects have the ability to connect us to something deeply human. Textiles have been part of our lives for thousands of years, carrying stories, traditions, and memories across generations. My work builds on this rich history while exploring contemporary ways of expressing texture, colour, and form. Each piece is created with the hope that it will be lived with, appreciated over time, and become a meaningful part of someone's everyday life.
